Jordan’s Journal: Good morning and happy Tuesday! To all you women out there that are pregnant or are planning on conceiving, this is a great post for you. During pregnancy keeping up with your oral hygiene is extremely important for both you and your baby. Pregnancy gingivitis can occur due to hormonal changes that increase the blood flow to the gum tissue and cause your gums to be more sensitive, irritable, and swollen. During pregnancy being seen every 3-4 months could be recommended to maintain the health of your gum tissue during pregnancy and can be monitored after your child is born. More important information can be provided to you by your provider about yours and your babies oral care.

She has an extensive career in healthcare and dental, Tonie has a diverse knowledge of clinical, compliance, insurance, and administrative management that has been put to great use at Epic Dentistry. Jordan’s Journal: Hello everyone! This picture is a great representation of the difference between attrition, erosion, abrasion and abfraction. Below are definitions of what each of these are and what they are due to: Dental attrition is the wearing of the incisal or occlusal surfaces of teeth as a result of functional or parafunctional tooth-to-tooth contact. Dental abrasion is tooth wear originating from friction or mechanical forces from a foreign object, and it predominantly impacts premolars and canines. Abfraction is tooth wear from flexural forces such as clenching and grinding. Lastly, tooth erosion is the wearing away of the tooth surface by an acid, which dissolves the enamel and dentin. There are six primary causes of erosion such as ones diet, regurgitation, environmental, the flow of saliva, exposed dentin, and idiopathic.

A common question I get from my patients are “what can I do to get rid of bad breath?” Tongue brushing is used to freshen breath by helping to get rid of the bacteria that lives on our tongue. Other benefits of tongue brushing include increasing sense of taste, enhances appearance and reduces the risk of mouth problems. By tongue brushing you can decrease the risk of gum disease, caries and ulcers in your mouth. There are metal and plastic devices that can be used to clean your tongue. Jordan’s Journal Day 2: Hello everyone! Today’s focus is how we can help minimize harmful microbes (viruses, bacteria and fungi) in the air. Studies have shown that doing a pre-rinse before brushing, flossing and before any dental procedure involving any type of aerosols can limit cross-contamination by 97%! The most effective pre-rinses to use at home are Listerine Antiseptic (must have alcohol or it will not be effective) and Chlorine Dioxide mouth rinse such as the brand DioxiRinse. In the dental setting we also have the option of using Chlorhexidine, also known as Peridex, as a great pre-rinse. Chlorhexidine is only available by prescription from your dental/medical provider.
